Career – Nursing

“When you're a nurse you know that every day you will touch a life or a life will touch yours.”

- Anonymous

I believe nursing is where my heart is telling me I should be - though, I have always had concerns as to whether or not I could handle the profession. It's a very demanding job - both physically and, especially, emotionally. Your hours at work require absolute attention and alertness. In the hospital setting, you're largely responsible for another life.

People can get better or they can take a turn for the worse and, in caring for someone so closely, it's hard not to get your emotions involved. You want them to get better and it's hard to put it aside when you've tried everything you know how to do and there is nothing else that can be done. You have days that are wonderful and that reaffirm your beliefs in people. You have days that are devastating and when you go home at night, for confidentiality reasons, you can basically say nothing more than “I've just had a really bad day at work.”

Despite the physical and emotional challenges of nursing, there is ultimately nothing more rewarding than to be given the opportunity to work with people who need your help.
