Riddle 07

As an exotic bird, for you, I'll sing.
I know your past and what your future brings.
Beautiful though I am, a sight to behold,
You love me because I see into your soul.
As Persephone was so loved by the god of death
That he hid her away beneath the depths,
I'll lull you into a blissful sleep
And I'll pull you down into the deep.
Into dreams, I'll send you with all my power -
We'll be running together through fields of flowers.
Come into my arms, I'll hold you safe.
Sleep well, my puppet, and your life I'll take.

Answer:

A siren

Legend has it that the sirens were originally the friends of the goddess Persephone. When Hades took Persephone away from her mother, Demeter gave them wings for them to fly in search of Persephone. Their song traditionally was continually calling for her. In later myth, they are represented as beautiful women who lived in a meadow on island somewhere in the sea. They sang to sailors who, upon hearing their song, would go to them. While the sirens are sometimes represented as beautiful women, their song is rarely considered sexual in nature. It appeals to men's soul more than to their bodies. Some legends state that the siren would sing the sailors to sleep and then rip their bodies apart. Other legends state that the men would starve to death as the couldn't bring themselves to leave. However they died, men rarely escaped the siren's song.
